"Failed to initialize audio device" error – how to fix
Softphone.Pro needs access to audio devices on PC to operate. If it doesn't have it (due to antivirus or OS settings) you will see "Failed to initialize audio device" error when making calls.
The issue manifests in different ways:
1. No access to playback device (headphones, speakers)
- when clicking numbers in main window tone signals aren't playing;
- you don't hear beeps or other side's voice during the call.
2. No access to microphone
- call doesn't start;
- call starts but the other side doesn't hear your voice.
This manual describes solutions for this issue.
Cause 1: Antivirus software forbids audio device access
You will encounter the error if your antivirus software forbids Softphone.Pro access to audio devices.
Solution
Add Softphone.Pro to the Trusted list of your antivirus (example for Kaspersky Antivirus).
Cause 2: OS settings prevent microphone access
"Failed to initialize audio device" will also occur if your OS settings forbid Softphone.Pro or all apps to access microphone.
Solution
Example for Windows 10.
Open Windows Settings and navigate to Privacy - Microphone tab. Scroll down and enable Allow desktop apps to access your microphone setting:
